Imagination

Above is a picture of the piggy pen that Ian set up the other day. Notice that the "baby pig" on the left is awake. The baby pig on the right is sleeping and drinking milk from the mommy pig.

I will be very sad when the public school system squashes his imagination out of him.

Molly's Movin'

Molly figured out this evening how to roll to move across the room. She was very pleased with herself and found all sorts of reasons to roll here and there. She is also really good at crawling backward. Unfortunately she finds that mode of transportation to be a little frustrating. She crawls backward when she wants to go forward and gets further away from whatever it was she wanted.

What the Poop?!?

If you've talked to Mom or Dad lately, they have possibly mentioned the farce that is our life these days. In case you haven't, let me catch you up to speed.

We moved to Orem about two weeks ago and were just getting settled into our new apartment and my new job when, out of the blue, a man from this firm with whom I had had a fantastic interview two months ago in Irvine called me to say that, although he knew I'd moved to Utah, he would like to hire me if I'm still interested.

I tried for four months to get a job in SoCal with absolutely ZERO success; So we move and within a week I've got a great offer to start as senior staff in a firm I really wanted to work for. Talk about spectacular timing.

In any case, Beatta and I have been going back and forth on this for several days; it would mean putting off law school for a year, but it would be a great job and experience. Gag.

Barfing and Pumpkin Seeds

I think that this picture pretty much sums up my thoughts about pumpkin seeds. More here (click on "Shasta Shootout" in the sidebar).

Pumpkin Carving

Here are some of our pumpkin carving pictures. Hallie had a

great time and then we made some tasty toasted pumkin seeds.

Cornbread

We are in need of a really good cornbread receipe. Our ward is having a chili cook off and we volunteered to bring some bread. I know Mom's dry cornbread is a favorite....but if anyone else has something a little less crumbly it would be greatly appreciated.

Toes and Mouth

As you can see, Molly has been all about pulling off her socks to get to her toes and sticking her hand (and anything else) into her mouth this week. When she pulls off her sock she giggles a sort of self-satisfied look-what-I-did giggle. It is very adorable.

Halloween

Is anyone doing anything fun for Halloween? Any fun costumes? I know the Bosworth's are not the greatest costume people.... Hallie is going to be a skunk again, her costume still fits from last year. She wants to be a sick little kitty, but was quite pleased when she put her skunk outfit on. We carved our pumpkin tonight which Hallie loved. We carved a skeleton into it... her choice.
Let us know what everyone is doing, or not doing, for Halloween!
Alison
(Hallie crawls around on the floor saying she is a sick little kitty and you must address her as that. If you speak to her without saying sick little kitty first, she will correct you and tell you to ask again. I am not sure where she picked up this lovely habit. She also meows exactly like a sick little kitty).

Memphis the lab rat

Good news! The NCSU Vet School is doing another wave of their study of Keppra to treat canine epilepsy. Read a write-up of the previous study here (scroll down).

Memphis has been accepted! (It's like getting into grad school. Professors scrutinize your qualifications, conduct tests designed to measure brain activity, and provide training or medication that may or may not be of any use.)

Her first appointment is next Monday. The study lasts (I think) 44 weeks. The study is double blind and is divided into 2 periods. In one, Memphis will get a placebo, in the other she will actually get the drug. We won't know which is which until the study is over.

Updates to follow...

Boys will be Boys

I was unloading the groceries and turned around to find Ian on his potty doing his business, outside. Ya just gotta laugh.

Pictures of Molly

You can see some new pictures of Molly in her album.

The Ultimate Movie Experience

Note: This was posted on our blog a while ago. Mom and Dad thought that it absolutely belonged on the family site as well, so here it is.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Kids of All Ages! Here now, in true time-stamp format for your viewing pleasure, is a record of the nightmare experience that was our trip to the movies on Saturday night.

7:30pm: Beatta and I left our apartment Saturday evening to see the Bourne Ultimatum with a few friends of ours. We are excited.

7:45pm: We arrive at the Spectrum in Irvine but fail to get our usual parking place. With time running out, I drop Beatta off with the tickets for our group and set out to find a spot to park.

8:00pm: After finding no spot, I make a fatal decision: Take my P.O.S. Ford Escort to the Valet service. $8 lost, but I'll make the movie in time.

8:03pm: A young man with bleach-blond hair and sunglasses approaches me awkwardly--no doubt noticing the Ferraris and Hummers surrounding my little red 2-door--and asks, "Sir, did you want a valet?"

10:20pm: Beatta and I hand the valet register our claim ticket and $8. We chortle to ourselves over the silly reality that our Ford is in valet parking. I call our babysitter Steven and inform him that we'll be home in 15 minutes.

10:30pm: No sign of our car

10:40pm: No sign of our car

10:45pm: A friendly valet boy (named Mike), who has retrieved no fewer than 6 cars himself while we've been waiting, looks at me quizzically and asks if we are still waiting. Yes, in fact, we are still standing here.

10:50pm: The assistant manager comes over, asks for a description of our car, and heads off to find it. I call Steven again and tell him we'll be home in fifteen minutes--but this time I mean it.

11:00pm: No sign of our car.

11:08pm: We come to the stark realization: The Valet Service has lost our car.

11:15pm: No sign of our car. I call James Bergener, who had attended the movie with us, who happily sends his wife Amy to pick up Beatta so she can go home and Steven can go to bed.

11:20pm: No sign of our car. Now the owner of the Valet service, along with 4 other employees, is out looking for our car. They stop back at the office now and then to check and make sure that we really are missing our car. We are. The owner of the service gives me my $8 back.

11:25pm: A portly fellow working at the valet reports our car to be found.

11:28pm: Amy Bergener arrives to pick up Beatta. We inform her that our car was found, thank her and send her back home.

11:30pm: The Valet service informs me that, although they have found our car, they can no longer find the keys. I call Steven again and tell him that it may still be a while. (The owner looking for the keys in the background.)

11:38pm: The keys are found in the driveway of the valet service. The owner, the portly employee, and the assistant manager head off to fetch our car. I call Steven and tell him that we will now, for real, be home soon.

11:45pm: No sign of the car. I get sick of this and go pick up a piece of cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory. I pick up an extra piece for our long suffering babysitter.

11:50pm: The portly fellow pulls up to the curb in a golf cart and informs us that our car has been found, with the keys, but the car will not start. He carts us over to our car, demonstrates this fact, and then has me fill out some paperwork before promising to get us a Taxi home and take care of any towing we need on Monday. It appears that the timing belt has come off its cogs.

11:58pm: A cab has been called, and we wait for it. It arrives. But, it won't accept form of payment (a voucher) from the valet company. The valet disputes and calls the Taxi corporate office. The valet company gets put on hold.

12:15pm: Valet company is still on hold. Thoroughly embarrassed, I call James Bergener again and explain the situation. He laughs and informs me that he and Amy are on their way to get us with a loaner car for the weekend.

12:25pm: I get to drive a Lexus (see the picture!) for the first time in my life.

12:28pm: I get to put the uh, pedal to the metal, in a Lexus for the first time in my life (Sorry, James). Beatta gets to pry her skull out of the head rest when I slow down.

12:35pm: We arrive home, a cool 2+ hours after the movie ends.

So how does the story end? Well, it doesn't. Not yet, anyway. I called the Valet company this morning about taking them up on their towing offer. The dude in the office blows me off and explains that they don't “do that sort of thing”. He does offer me some complementary valet vouchers to make up for making us sit on a street corner for two hours wondering where our car is. I told him he can keep them.

April's name: For the Dogs?

I had a truly wonderful conversation with a worker at the temple this morning. Imagine old guy with heavy drawl:

worker: Ryan and April Bosworth, 11:00?

Me: That's us.

worker: I have a daughter named April.

Me: It's a nice name.

worker: It is. [Pause] We had to name her April 'cause the dogs got the good names.

Me: Huh. [Thinking: Did he just say that?]

Family Ties

Ian woke up from his nap today announcing that he missed his buddy Hallie. He was moppy about it for a good hour. When I told him that we could call her on the computer, he was completely unsatisfied. He wanted to go to Hallie's house "right now".

On Friday morning as we were anticipating the arrival of the beloved buddy, Ian announced that he wanted to go pick up his 'nother poppa from the airport.

Hallie

We went to Ryan's house for conference this past weekend and had a good time. We also took our family pictures there. Here are a few of Hallie that I thought were cute.

Sloan forced to praise AK-47

This story made me laugh out loud.

What kind of praise will Sloan come up with to "balance" his criticism?

Future exchange at training camp in Boise:

Sloan: "Quit dragging your feet!"

AK: "I feel unmotivated! Praise me!"

Sloan: "AK-47" is the coolest nickname ever! And you look like that boxer from Rocky IV!"

AK: "That doesn't provide sufficient "balance"! Your criticism still outweighs your praise!"

Sloan: "If there were a world championship for "monkey in the middle" you would win every year!"

AK: "Thanks! I will now perform at peak efficiency!"

Please post suggestions for future praise. I'll forward them to Sloan. He'll carry them on a laminated card like an NFL coach with a play sheet.

Moving to Provo

Just a quick post to make sure everyone is up-to-date with our situation (because we're so narcissistic that we assume everyone is hanging on the edge of their seats in anticipation) In case Mom and Dad haven't told everyone, we are moving to Provo next week. I tried for 3-4 months to avoid such a move by getting a job in California, but nothing ever came of the job search (though I did get several good lunches...at least I didn't go home completely empty-handed) down here.

I got a job at Shelf Reliance, a company owned by Steve Palmer (Amy Kindred's husband), and will be there for the next little while until I can get into a law school. I'm not entirely sure what my specific job is right now, but will update that later when I get more details myself. Although we're not thrilled about moving to Provo, we're very thankful that we will be near some good friends and that Steve was able to get me a job in his company.

As far as law school is concerned, I'm taking the LSAT on December 1. Where will I be applying? In all honesty, I don't know yet. I know a couple of places that are likely, but if any of you have any advice/suggestions, I'd gladly welcome them.

Don't Laugh, It's Fast

One of the Mazda club members here in NC replaced the rotary engine in his 1st generation RX-7 with a Ford small-block V8. The caption says it all...
