Not again!

OK, so what's with the bears? Today Lisa and I are hiking back from Prairie Lakes. We hear rustling off to the side (30-40 yards). We look and see a bear cub running along the hillside. I think, "oh, what a cute little bear. Oh, no, where's the mother!" The mother is behind the cub about 10 yards looking at us. We head out. We did not take a picture. We did not look to see what the mother would do. We didn't run, but we moved as quickly as possible. It was close to 10 minutes before we slowed down. Enough of bears!

Last time it was an obviously fake picture; this time no picture.

I'm not buying it.

When I saw the first bear for the second time and told your dad, he thought I was joking. I said I don't joke about bears. I'm still not joking.
I'm going to town in a few minutes to check out "bear sprays." Such a repellent is supposed to work. I can't imagine needing it, but there are certain family members who might sleep more easily knowing I am protecting myself from wild animals.

Alright, I'll just say now that your forest ranger credibility goes right out the door when you start advocating "Bear Spray".

Do they make citronella candles for bears too? Is Dr. Lyon going to replace his mosquito abatement problems in Micro 2 with Bear abatement ones?

I just got back from checking the spray out. $25 protects you from 12-15 feet. Great - at that range I'd be so scared I wouldn't be able to get the spray out of my backpack! $60 for 30 feet. Bigger and farther can be ordered.

I think I'll just do what the books say: make noise (talk lots) and don't panic, just walk away. Plus no hiking alone in remote areas.

Good advice. Because two 50+ year old women stand a much better chance of defeating a bear in combat than one.

I'm not leaving the condo alone anymore. There are coyotes in the courtyard, and they don't look friendly. I'll bet the bears followed NARB home, and they're checking out the garage for a winter den.

Not to mention the foxes.

Or the bats.

Just make sure they have an assigned parking spot. Otherwise, there may be blood.
